Latest News:
Congratulations to Max Mollard in winning the 2009 Bendigo Chess Club Championship. Max was a point ahead going into the final round, and could be caught by both Huw & Leigh if he lost his final round game to David (and Huw and Leigh both won).
Sam ended Huw's chances by turning the tables after weathering a strong queenside attack, Leigh, however, was looking good a pawn up against Nigel. However, Max had achieved a strong material advantage in the endgame against David and was happy to offer a draw in an overwhelming position, rendering Leigh's efforts "in vain". Leigh still won the game to finish second. A good result also for Huw in his first year, fnishing third and defeating both of the top two seeds.
In the Reserves, Andre made his unassailable lead even more unassailable by defeating Iain in a game played in advance, to win the Reserves for the second year in a row.
International Allegro (21 Jan 2009) won by Nigel Barrow on 5/5, just ahead of Max Mollard & Carl Weibgen (total 18 players).
Next Week: (Jan 28) First round of Summer Swiss (90 min + 30 sec each move).
Max Mollard wins Mark Harrington Quickplay Championship (first event in 2009), Ron Attril won the Reserves section..
